This peaceful schooling fish adds stunning colour and movement to planted community aquariums and thrives when kept in groups.

Behaviour

Cardinal Tetras are active, peaceful schooling fish that should be kept in groups of at least six, although larger groups of ten or more will display more natural behaviour and create a spectacular display. They occupy the middle levels of the aquarium and feel most secure in well-planted tanks.

Tank Size

Minimum Tank Size: 60 litres

A planted aquarium with open swimming areas, subdued lighting and dark substrate helps bring out their vibrant colours. Gentle filtration and stable water conditions are ideal.

Compatibility

Excellent for peaceful community aquariums.

Good tank mates include:

  • Other Tetras

  • Corydoras

  • Rasboras

  • Dwarf Gouramis

  • Small Rainbowfish

  • Peaceful Dwarf Cichlids

Avoid large or aggressive fish that may view them as prey.

Diet

Omnivore

Feeds on:

  • High-quality micro flakes

  • Micro pellets

  • Frozen bloodworms

  • Brine shrimp

  • Daphnia

Feed once or twice daily with a varied diet to maintain vibrant colouration and good health.

Care

Water Temperature: 23–28°C
pH Range: 4.5–7.0
Water Hardness: Soft to moderately soft

Maintain excellent water quality with regular weekly water changes. Cardinal Tetras prefer stable water conditions and are best introduced into mature, well-established aquariums. Plenty of plants and shaded areas will help them feel secure and display their best colours.
